Sodium triphosphate (STP), also sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), or tripolyphosphate (TPP) is an inorganic compound with formula Na5P3O10. It is produced on a large scale as a component of many domestic and industrial products, especially detergents.

STPP is a preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds. It is common in food production as E number E451. In foods, STPP is used as an emulsifier and to retain moisture. Many governments regulate the quantities allowed in foods, as it can substantially increase the sale weight of seafood in particular. The United States Food and Drug Administration lists STPP as "generally recognized as safe."

Sodium Tripolyphosphate maily used in water softening (calcium and magnesium hardness is sequestered from solution without precipitation); peptizing agent, emulsifier and dispersing agent, ingredient of cleansers in drilling fluids to control mud viscosity in oil fields; as preservative, sequestrant and texturizer in foods.

【Applications of Sodium Tripolyphosphate】
1. Food grade in food industry
Sodium tripolyphosphate is used in the food industry as an emulsifying agent and quality improver agent, for example, including processed meat processed seafood, processed cheeses, noodles product. It is used as quality improver in the process of canned food, fruit juice drinks, foodstuffs from milk or soybeans. It may tender the meat in canned ham and soften the skin of horse bean in canned horse bean. It may also serve as a softener or densifier in foodstuff industry.

2. Industrial application
(1) mainly used as syndet adjuvant,

(2) soap synergist and prevent bar soap from oiling off and blooming;

(3) has strong emulsification on lubricant and oils and fats,

(4) can be used to adjust the PH value of buffer soap solution;

(5) can be used as water softener for industrial water, pretanningagent and dyeing adjuvant;

(6) drilling mud dispersant;

(7) dispersant in preparing suspension in paint, kaolinite, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate etc.;

(8) oil-proofing agent and antifoulant in paper industry.

【Uses】

1. STPP used as main auxiliary of synthetic wash, soap synergistic agent, water softener,leather pre-tanning agent,dye auxiliary agent;

2. STPP is one dispersant of suspension such as paint, kaolin, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate drilling mud;

3. STPP also used as preservative agent for paper making, organic synthesis catalyze;

4. STPP used in epuration of petroleum product, gum latex storage;

5. As dispersant,STPP solvent in metal industry and pharmaceutical industry.

6. STPP used as quality improver, water retentive agent in the process of meat product, fruit juice drinks, beer, dairy products etc;

7. STPP can tender the meat and enhance glutinosity of ham and canned foods, increase weight and keep fresh of seafoods;

8. STPP also prevent protein from curds,sedimentation of dairy product, drinks from oxidation,change color, decomposition of Vitamin C;

9. STPP adjust the quality and intensify function of soybean albumen, soften the scarfskin of horsebean and fruit vegetable;

10. STPP also used as softener and densifier agent.
